For personal protection on the job site, workers should avoid wearing loose fitting clothing. Loose garments may catch on anything and cause injury. Avoid wearing clothing saturated with grease, oil, gasoline, and any other flammable substances. Employees wearing visible jewelry will be asked to remove it. If it is visible it may become a hazard. Shirts and long pants shall be worn at all times. Gloves, respirators and specially designed protective clothing must be worn under hazardous conditions. Butane lighters should not be carried on the job site
Every worker shall, at all times, wear protective headwear on a construction project. A CSA certified class B safety hat, shall be worn on the job site. Workers shall not paint or drill holes in the shell. The shell and suspension system shall be inspected regularly and replaced if damaged. Cracked, deeply scratched or defective hats must never be used.
Workers must wear CSA certified Grade 1 footwear on the job site at all times. The safety footwear shall have a box toe that will protect against injury due to impact. The footwear should be capable of withstanding forces up to 167 ft. lbs. The sole of the footwear shall protect against puncture and resist up to 270 lbs of force.
Standard CSA approved eye protection will be provided and shall be worn at all times when there is risk of an injury from chipping, drilling, grinding, cutting, welding, flying dust particles, and acid or toxic fluids. It is mandatory that all eyewear be equipped with side shields.
Hearing protection will be provided and shall be worn at all times in areas of high concentration of excessive loud noise. The use of earplugs of earmuffs is strongly recommended when noise levels exceed 85 dBA. Sound intensity doubles every 3 decibels, the potential damage to the unprotected ear will double as well.
Precautions, including sufficient flash protection, shall be taken to prevent burns and fire whenever welding, cutting or brazing operations are carried out in the workplace. Any worker who is engaged in welding practices shall wear welding helmets. When working in a confined area where continuous welding is in progress, workers shall wear appropriate eye protection. Goggles will be provided where necessary Compressed gas cylinders shall be handled, used and stored to eliminate or reduce any hazard of fire and explosion. In particular, cylinders shall be secured upright, used only with the appropriate fittings and hardware, stored separately, and never be lifted by their collars or their caps.
